As we enter what promises to be one of the most polarizing divisive presidential campaigns this nation’s ever seen, I want to leave some food for thought. Below is a quote from President Kennedy’s Commencement Address to the American University in 1963 that gives me chills anytime I hear it. Let’s take it to heart and see what’s possible in 2008.
So, let us not be blind to our differences — but let us also direct attention to our common interests and to the means by which those differences can be resolved. And if we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity. For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children’s future. And we are all mortal.
Well-crafted video from the Obama folks whoing how disallusioned folks have become with Hillary and her style of politics. The clip of the woman swapping signs is poignant.
Funny video seen on kottke. Too bad the 22nd amendment doesn’t say ‘person or married couple’ and save us all the misery of Hillary. Bush squared was bad enough, Clinton squared couldn’t be much better.
Why do I feel like the race has already been plotted out, that the candidates chosen? Regardless, I’m still a Joe Biden fan, and wish that those of you already choosing one of the other Democratic candidates would take a minute or two and at least consider Senator Biden. He’s not as sexy or hip or black or female of corrupt or out-of-touch or expensive haircutty or Clintony as the others, but he’s a hard worker, a civil servant, a leader and pragmatist. I used to think we needed ideology and experience was secondary, but I’ve found the inverse to be true. To get things done and affect real change we need someone to lead us there, not wish us there. I believe that person is Joe Biden. It’s not about electability or sexiness or new-ness, it’s about making our world better.
I stumbled upon a broadcast of eTown on my way home last night, I rarely am driving around at 7pm on a Sunday so it’s not inconceivable that I wouldn’t have heard this before. So what is eTown, well according to their about us page, they are a hippie radio focused on music and community. Basically they pull in cool people, cool musicians and talk about ways to make life a little better. It’s a neat format and they are gracious enough to have much of what they do available via podcasts. You can also track down a local broadcast. The show has been around for 15 years, can’t believe I’ve never heard of it before now.
I wish blame for our current state of affairs were Bush’s solely to carry, the truth is that he is simply the latest in a line of inept and corrupt presidents who share in this mess. Much like Rome, indeed.
Call me crazy, but I’ve just never been a fan of wikipedia or the concept of self-regulated, community-sourced ‘facts’. The power-trip factor combined with anonymity make it a great place to push an agenda and silence opinions to the contrary. Need more proof? O’reilly Radar talks about wikiscanner, a tool to view edits to wikipedia via IP/domain. Oh Fox News, you never cease to underwhelm.
