Devil in Dioxin

Dioxin, Duplicity & Dupont - Sierra Club Chronicles
The DuPont plant in DeLisle, Mississippi has been releasing large amounts of dioxin and heavy metals for nearly 20 years. This film explores health problems being experienced by residents and former workers, and evidence that oysters in the area exported for sale around the U.S. have been contaminated by DuPont’s poisonous discharges. About 2,000 people have filed lawsuits against DuPont alleging pollution from this facility has harmed their health.

This story reminds me of the disaster at Times Beach, MO. More info here, here and here.

Old Atari Games

When we were in Pella at Tulip Time last week I saw this box in an old appliance store that recently closed and was preparing for an auction/fire sale (and yes that’s E.T. and Human Cannonball in the pile):

Obama MySpace Muscle-Job

There’s an article on the Big In Japan blog about the Obama campaign working with MySpace to commandeer a fan page. Not sure about this whole setup, comes down to understanding the terms of service and really knowing where the line is. I think it’s a shame that the campaign gets Joe’s friends and content, the page should have been wiped and the name alone transferred. Giving them the fruits of his work is shameful and the Obama camp was way out of line on this.

On a tagent, I’m seeing a trend in the Obama ranks, more and more politic-y behavior and a straying from their ‘new rules for politics’ approach. I’m wondering, is it possible to have a new-breed of candidate without having a new-breed of staff? Basically if Obama is not a business-as-usual candidate does it really matter if at the end of the day his staff is all dyed-in-the-wool democratic staffers pulling the same crap stunts they always have?

Outsourcing Fundamentalism

Looks like we’re not the only nation struggling with religious fundamentalists taking over thr courts and government. Indian officials have taken a page from the John Ashcroft playbook and issued a warrant for Richard Gere’s arrest for his repeated cheek pecking of a Bollywood actress at a recent AIDS benefit. Awesome, apparently Bush appoints judges there too. I struggle to see how they aren’t offended by his movies, but when he’s himself all hell breaks loose, where were these people when Mr. T and the Women came to theaters?

An Open Letter

Dear Ms. Police Officer,

Thank you for not giving me a ticket this morning. You were gracious enough to let me be on my way, even though I was certainly in the wrong.

Thanks,
Me

P.S. - Just curious, why the hell is the speed limit for a major suburban 4+lane street 25mph? No schools nearby, no nursing homes, just mixed residential and commercial properties. This 25mph limit is one heckuva great way to make some big money for a tiny neighborhood. Oh well, next time I’ll take the freeway.

McCain MySpace Payback

John McCain gets a poke after a big web faux paux. Nicely done. Reason #445 to hate myspace - just because.

Passionate About Pizza

Serious Eats is a compelling read regardless of your ‘foodie’ caste. Take for example this post on flying a pizza nearly 3,000 miles from Portland to NYC for a Serious review. Rock.
