The Franklin is Just for Show

You can do the same with a Washington…

Thanks to Jake for the inspiration and resources, I’ve added the iWPhone plugin for Wordpress to the site. If you’re an iPhone owner this site is now iPhone-friendlier. I did hack the template code to accommodate my preference for ma.gnolia over del.icio.us and whacked the technorati links.

Hello Wordpress, Are You There?

Looks like MT has joined Typepad (surprising I know) and now has an iPhone optimized admin. Wordpress needs to take a minute see if this is worth the effort to implement. I’d love to have it, but it’s not nearly compelling enough to consider a switch. Sure I could build my own, but I don’t have that kind of time - maybe someone reading this does. If so drop me a line and let’s chat.

Thoughts on iPhone Price Drop

cryI’m curious what folks think about the price drop, specifically those of you who - like me - are well outside any sort of return/re-shelve/refund window. Are you upset? Couldn’t care less? Do you agree with Jobs that it’s “just technology”?

Personally I think it’s bad form, but not entirely unexpected. I’d like that $200 back, but I believe it was a $600 product then and I’ve made good use of it in those two months. It is a shitty tack for the company to take to burn people willing to take a leap into a new frontier with them, and they will never again see a launch like they had with this phone. There’s also a real potential for new buyers to shy away now, Apple has been notorious for these price slashing prior to a new revision, which is certainly possible (although not probable) before Christmas. Apple has become a consumer product business, and the exemplary customer satisfaction they tout in their marketing and interviews took a hit yesterday. If they keep this up they will be a big consumer electronics business like they wish to be, the kind everyone hates.

The drop also shows a weakness in the market for the product and the overt profit-taking being done upfront. I believe Apple was hedging their bets on demand and wanted to isolate a price point that kept buzz high, demand under control and supplies in-line. To those ends, I feel Apple is struggling with the product (nearly a million sold in 10 weeks doesn’t add up to 10 million in 53 weeks, even with holiday feasting). The price drop is meant to stir interest and grab the remnant buyers out there, but I think ultimately the Touch is going to make the most of the iPhone R&D spending and we’ll see the iPhone go the way of the Newton. My gut says this time next year there will not be a cell phone Apple product on the market.

Am I nuts? Let me hear it.

So Who Is Hacking Their iPhone

iphone_callout.jpgFrom the looks of things there a fair amount of development going on (C4, etc.) using jailbreak and the other hacking libraries, but how many users are going taking the leap? I don’t know about the rest of you, but I can’t really bare the thought of hacking my phone and being left with a shiny brick…just doesn’t seem like the pay-off is worth it. Frankly I’m a little self-centered in my view of the world, I’d prefer people stick with web-based apps for the device rather than continuing down the path of native apps. It’s better for me A) because it’s something I can and have been developing for seeing as how I’m not a cocoa developer and B) it’s a win-win to develop web-based apps - if it’s a compelling idea, done well it can serve an audience larger than the iPhone, why not appeal to a broader audience.

So here’s the question…Are you hacking your iPhone? What super-fantastic app, if any, would compel you to hack? Join in the fray, leave a comment.

There are a host of improvements I’d love to see on the device, but I’m content to wait out Apple and see what they deliver, rather than hack and drop in native apps.

Cool iPhone Video Trick

shown below is a very cool iPhone trick to basically view any Google video file using the ‘download to iPod’ link, great for viewing videos that may not be in the YouTube h264 queue yet.

New iPhone Vintage Stamp Wallpapers

stamp_astro.jpgYou may remember way back when, I posted a bunch of vintage postage stamp desktop wallpapers, well I picked through the best of those and created iPhone-friendly versions. The vintage, rough scans make for a nice contrast with modern sleek lines of the iPhone. Grab them in the downloads section.
