*Camp Nonsense
October 2nd, 2007Looks like I, as an Iowan, have another reason to dislike Michigan. Apparently they didn’t get the memo up there that *camps and crappy homegrown conference are two different things. ArbCamp has: keynote speakers, high dollar sponsors, admission and a rigid session schedule (at 2pm everyone sits apparently) are of which are contrary to the overall barcamp model. The Ann Arbor folks can certainly run their own conference, but they need to reevaluate the name at a minimum and review the barcamp model if they want to be good citizens.
On a side note, I just participated in the BlogOrlando ‘unconference’ and I’d have certainly paid to see the speakers. I’ve no clue who Joseph Jaffe is, $50 seems damn steep for a keynote-only earlybird rate. Pretty ambitious folks in the land of maize and blue. If you want to see social media conferences done right, I’d recommend talking to the organizers of the Orlando, Philly and Atlanta unconferences.

Us Michiganders just wanted to give you something to complain about. Thanks for the link btw, and if you’re anywhere near Ann Arbor on October 27, we’d love to have you share on a topic at our first ever Arb Camp. It’s going to be a great event.
Thanks!
That’s a shame.
Too many people try to take advantage of community efforts like barcamp. When you throw one these events, you’re using a ‘brand’ to help publicize things without staying true to any of the values that folks have worked so hard to establish. It’s not illegal to do so, it’s just.. well.. it’s lame.
At least it’s ‘arbcamp’ and not a barcamp-in-name.
Iowan or Iowegian?
Where have you been hiding Lefty?
