Dear John for Dear Ma.gnolia

Sorry Ma.gnolia, I have to break things off. While your looks are striking and your attitude sassy you’re just way to slow and frankly a little too dumb for me. Sure Del.icio.us isn’t as pretty and maybe a little feature-fat, she can do daily blog posting and several other cool tricks that you just can’t seem to learn. I hate to do it, but I have to go, xmlrpc is calling.

You can always call Kirk…

  1. Sorry to see you go, Jeremy. We might not be all that in your eyes, but we’d always take you back, and you might not believe it but our tiny dev team does intend to do a daily blog post feature. But what’s done is done; Del will treat you right, and I hope you’re happy together.

We tried Kirk, but he said you and him were going bowling a lot together, and it would be weird.

Like any good breakup all it takes to win me back is a little jiggle and shake. If you can get the daily blogging working and improve the page response I’ll be back in a heartbeat.

  3. If it were quicker I’d switch in a heartbeat also. Del.icio.us hurts my eyes…

  4. What kind of load times are you guys seeing? We typically see under 5 seconds for almost all pages, from various locations.

On my corporate connection I had the bookmarklet timeout nearly 50% of the time, so every other link required reloading the bookmarklet. I also had frequent timeouts requiring refresh on loads for tag cloud clicks, next pages and link edit pages, it wasn’t rare to have those pages churn for 15 or more seconds. Always struck me as a pipe and load/backend issue not a client rendering issue, but I wouldn’t dare troubleshoot someone else’s app.

  6. Have you had the timeouts consistently since, say, two weeks ago? We dropped in some new hardware at that point that has made a big difference, and have been reining in excessive api use, which has made a difference since then.

If you’ve seen serious delays like this very recently, then I’m not sure what to say.
